How soccer protests are creating political turmoil

Soccer protests have taken on many forms in recent years. Megan Rapinoe’s protest against racial injustices within sports and across society was sparked by her kneeling in the national anthem in 2016. In February, the United States team declared that no player would continue to kneel during the national anthem. Prior to a game against Sweden the U.S. national team announced that players would no longer kneel during the anthem.

Canada Soccer's lack of explicit support for soccer protests

Canada Soccer's lack of explicit support for the soccer protests has led to a series of questions. What is Canada Soccer's position regarding transparency in its funding and recruitment? Does Canada Soccer want equal pay for its players? Is it willing to offer equal compensation to men and women players?

Taking the knee as a statement against racism

Many in soccer are questioning the significance of the recent controversy about taking the knee. While some have praised the move, others believe it to be politically motivated. The protests have been supported by the UEFA, soccer federations and other organizations, presumably to show that soccer is progressive and inclusive. But, it seems like the movement has become more about self promotion than actual action against racism.

England: Kneeling in England

The protest of English football players has sparked a political storm. Conservative politicians have condemned the practice, saying it is a political declaration and not a way to show support for racism. But supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement say that it is a way of showing support. Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, stated that this gesture should be permitted as long as people have the freedom to express themselves.

Hungary: Take the knee

While some England players have taken to the ground to protest racial injustices during soccer games, supporters of Hungary's national team have refused to do this in their games. The team has been booed by some supporters in Hungary, as well. Although it isn't clear why the players chose this route, Hungarian fans have reacted strongly to the protest.

Colombians - Take the knee

Colombian protestors are not the first to kneel. They were calling attention to the fact that they did not receive any support from the team, almost all of whom are Black. Instead of showing solidarity, they have been posting anodyne posts on social media.

FIFA 19: Kneeling

The controversial move of taking the knee in football is still common. However, it is an important part of modern football. This move was regularly used in the Premier League and even featured at the Euros. FIFA should consider this growing trend and incorporate it into the game.
