
There are many inspiring athletes. But some of them do more than just compete in sports. These athletes make use of their platform to promote social change. We will be discussing a few of these athletes, including Serena Williams, Brittany Griner, Mary Keitany, and Michael Phelps. These athletes inspire us all to do more and become better people.
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps is one the most famous athletes of all time. As a teenager, Phelps turned professional and has won 28 Olympic Medals over four Olympic Games as well as 39 World Records. Phelps has also battled depression, and has since become an advocate for mental health and wellness. He produced a HBO Sports documentary called "The Weight of Gold" that he recently produced. Interviews with Olympians Greg Louganis who is widely recognized as the greatest diver in history are featured in the film.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is a major influence on tennis and has inspired many players. She is a strong voice that can be used to help others in need. She has helped to create schools for underprivileged children, and championed healthcare for women and infants. She is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Brittany Griner
Brittany Griner's inspiring story is a source of inspiration for many athletes. Her bullies at school led her to be called "a male" and she was even once called "a woman." Griner contemplated slitting both her wrists as a way to express her feelings of being an outcast. Griner persevered, despite being criticized. She was an Olympic gold medalist.
Mary Keitany
Keitany won TCS New York Marathon the year 2018. After the race she knew she would win New York City Marathon in 2019. She was motivated to win for her family and show her pride in them. Keitany was able achieve this despite the challenges that she faced after giving birth her first child.
Michael Oher
Michael Oher, a young man who was a nomad, lived his entire life as a nomad. The end of the first grades saw child services remove Michael Oher and his siblings from the home of their mother. They were moved around from foster homes to friend's couches.
Althea Gibbons
Althea Gibbons is an inspirational figure to young and older athletes. Born in Silver, South Carolina in 1927, Althea Gibson fought against inequalities in her community as well as in sports. As a result, she became the best female player in the world and the first black woman to win a Wimbledon championship.
