Equal pay for women's soccer

A recent Seton Hall Sports Poll sponsored jointly by the Sharkey Institute (and the Stillman School of Business) found that 91 per cent of women believe women should receive equal compensation for playing soccer. While only 74% of male respondents agree. Similar to the men, 79% of women believe equal pay should become the norm in professional sports. Only 59% agree. While this is definitely a step in the right direction, it still needs to be a reality.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock, along with other female sports stars, called for equal pay at the U.S. women's World Cup. They aren't the only women who play sports; many men also are underpaid. The Best Team Award was won by the US Women's National Team at the 2018 Women's World Cup. The team was presented with the award by Bullock. Alex Morgan is the team's representative and she won the Best Female Athlete Award.

The United States Women's National Soccer Team occupied the centre stage at 2019 ESPY Award. Bullock presented a Best Team Award (to Megan Rapinoe), the Golden Boot Award Winner of the FIFA Women's World Cup. There's a long way to go before the United States women's national team earns the same as its male counterparts. There are steps to be taken in order to attain equal pay for women soccer players in the United States and other nations. According to Cherita Ellens (CEO of Women Employed), women currently make 80 cents for each dollar earned by a man. Ellens feels confident that women's teams will one day achieve equal pay for equal labor. She hopes the players will help this effort to make it a reality.

Equal pay can be subjective. As an example, if the World Cup was won by the men's teams in 2015, it should be won by the women's teams as well. However, that doesn't mean the women's team should not be rewarded as much as the men's. The women's team has been playing for more games that the men's. They have had more work to keep up. The World Cups' prize money has been the same. Not all players are called up to every camp. Injuries, coaching decisions, as well as the number of games played by each team all impact who plays when.

U.S. Soccer

A historic agreement has been reached between the USSF, soccer unions regarding equal pay for women and men in soccer. The agreement stipulates that each team will be paid equally and share the World Cup money. It also provides that men as well as women will receive equal payments at non World Cup tournaments. Both men and women can earn the same amount abroad and at home, provided they play the exact same number of games.

Cone, who was a former member of the women's national team, stated in September that he would not sign any contract with any team offering less prize money. Cone signed a contract on Tuesday. The women's union supported the deal. The men's union has lawyers watching the negotiations, and the women's players association congratulated the players on winning their battle against gender discrimination. The leaders of the women's soccer players union said that they will continue to hold U.S. Soccer responsible for their decision.

The prize money in soccer has the largest pay gap. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, men's teams will compete for almost $440m while women will compete for $30 million. Five female soccer stars have sued to demand equal pay. The players claim their wages are four times lower than their male counterparts. Equal pay for women soccer players is long overdue. But why is it still a problem.

There are many reasons that women and men earn different salaries. Women have always had to compete with men in order to survive. Nevertheless, the difference in compensation has been significant. The USSF has not always been very transparent about their salaries, and the women on its team are no exception. This is why they have been so active in public relations. A spokesperson for the USSF told Reuters that they have a strong commitment to equal pay for all of their players.
