Women in sport face many challenges. Historically, women were not allowed to play in professional sports leagues or compete at high levels. Women were considered too fragile to be able to participate in high-impact sport and were too busy caring for the family. Only three jobs were available to women in sports: secretarial, teaching, and crossing guard.
There are fewer opportunities
Women often experience less opportunity to participate in sports in high school than their male counterparts. This can often be attributed to the social stigma that is associated with female athletes. This stigma is not just limited to certain conferences or geographic regions. It can also refer to the fact that girls from low-income families often lack the resources and opportunities for sport.
Media attention less
Despite the fact female athletes making up more than half of professional athletes, they receive less media attention that their male counterparts. Despite the fact women athletes do just as much work than male athletes, this is not surprising. Female sports generally receive less media coverage than their male counterparts, and more attention is given to talent and appearances than to individual achievements.
Less expectations
There are many factors that can influence women's participation in sport. Female athletes will likely have a lower entry barrier than male athletes, which is because they are more likely to be dominated by the other gender. These differences may be caused by biological differences or differences in the socialization of girls and boys.
Transgender transgender females take part in sports
Transgender women have been banned from participating in recreational sports since the IOC introduced trans policies almost two decades ago. Transgender females are often subject to discrimination harassment and violence. Any attempt to bar them is not only dangerous, but it also weakens their cause.
Title IX
Title IX is a federal law that protects women's rights in sports. However, women from historically underrepresented communities have not benefited from the legislation as much as they should. According to a study by the Women's Sports Foundation, girls in predominantly minority schools have access to only 67% of athletic opportunities, compared to 82% of girls in predominantly white schools.
Flo's support for female sports stars
Flo McLean grew to be the seventh child in a family that had eleven. At an early stage, her parents told her that she needed speed to get what she wanted. After her parents separated, she moved with her mother to Watts, an under-resourced and over-policed neighborhood. She discovered the Sugar Ray Robinson Youth Foundation which offered athletic opportunities to the youth of the area.
